What a Real Content Plan Contains
The document that decides whether a shoot day works — what goes in it, who signs it off, and what happens when nobody replies.
Ask most businesses how next month's content gets planned and the honest answer is that it does not. Someone has a good idea on the way to the shoot, the shoot fills up with whatever was available, and the posting schedule gets assembled afterwards from what happened to be captured.
The fix is unglamorous: a written plan for the month, agreed before anyone books a camera. Here is what ours contains and how it moves, because the document is doing more work than it looks like it is.
What goes in the plan
The month and the client. Obvious, and the reason plans do not get confused with each other six months later.
The target audience, written specifically. Not "our customers" — an age range, a location, and what these people are actually looking for. A real one reads like: adults 30 to 60, North Jersey, looking for fresh ingredients and globally inspired cooking, fine dining. Everything downstream is judged against that line.
The quantity and type of content, counted. Four to six reels and five to ten professional photos is what a month looks like written down, rather than "some video and some stills."
The themes for the month, and then the specific ideas inside them. Themes alone are not a plan; they are a category.
Execution notes on each idea — the angle, the transition, what the shot is actually doing. This is what turns a plan into a shot list without a second meeting.
References and inspiration, linked. Showing beats describing, and it removes most of the argument about what a client meant.
Audio and sound suggestions where they matter. On short-form the sound is half the post, and choosing it after the edit is backwards.
How it gets built
The plan is not invented in a vacuum. It comes out of a recurring strategy conversation with the client, or from what they told us at intake — their goals, what is coming up, what worked last month.
When a client has not given us enough to work with, the plan still gets built. We use our own judgement of their industry, brand and goals rather than sending back an empty document and waiting. A client who is busy running their business is not a reason for a month to go unplanned.
